This new feature could change Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for the better

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might have a new AI feature to make conversations with NPCs more realistic and fun.

Elan Ruskin, the lead programmer at Insomniac Games, said in a Twitch stream that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine will have “very cool dialogue technology” (opens in new tab). Ruskin also said that “they always run in frame” is his favorite thing about Insomniac’s games.

As the release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which will be around the end of 2023, gets closer, there are many things I hope to see improved in the upcoming PS5 game, and dialogue is definitely near the top of the list.

New potential

Ruskin didn’t say much about what we can expect from this new dialogue technology, but one seems likelier than the others.

This feature could be an AI that lets players have more interesting conversations with NPC characters. With this technology, you can talk to the many NPCs you meet during your heroic adventures more naturally. Even though we don’t know all the details yet, it’s clear that the goal of this new dialogue technology is to make Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 feel more real than its predecessors.

Steps forward

Even though I like Marvel’s Spider-Man series, I can’t say that Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales hooked me as the first game did.

Even though Miles Morales isn’t part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the formula for superhero movies was getting old. In Miles Morales, the action and dialogue seemed repetitive and worn out compared to the first Marvel’s Spider-Man. I was also very tired of Marvel then, which didn’t help the game.

Here is where the new dialogue technology will give Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 a new lease on life. I’m tired of running into either heavily scripted dialogue that sounds like it came straight from Kevin Feige’s mouth or flat conversations with random NPC characters who don’t even seem happy to see me.

If Insomniac Games updates the dialogue features with new technology, I look forward to playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to see how this attempt to give the game’s NPCs new life works out.
