This month, the Nintendo Switch turned seven years old, and the more time goes by, the more people talk about what will come next. Even though we don’t know much about the Nintendo Switch 2, the top boss of the gaming company recently said that whatever comes next will “surprise and delight.”
Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo breaks its Silence
In a recent Q&A with the Associated Press (via the U.K. newspaper The Daily Mail), Nintendo CEO Doug Bowser was asked directly when the Switch’s replacement would come out. The PR-savvy president mostly sidestepped the question by talking about how great the current Switch console is, but he did give a hint about what Nintendo wants to do with the next one.
“One thing we always think about is how to surprise and please. How can we add new and different ways to play? “That’s always on our minds,” Bowser said. He couldn’t be pushed much further, saying that he “should be careful about what I personally would like to see [in a new Switch].” But even so, the above quote at least makes us curious about what’s next for Nintendo in terms of hardware while we wait for more news.
To add to Bowser’s point, Nintendo is known for doing things that people don’t expect. For example, the Nintendo Wii, which was a huge hit, started the motion-control craze of the mid-2000s. Not many people thought that the company would follow up that juggernaut console with the Nintendo Wii U, which has a controller that looks like a tablet.
Even though that console failed in the end, the Nintendo Switch has been another success. According to the company’s most recent earnings report, the hybrid home console/handheld system has sold more than 122 million units so far (opens in new tab).
What to expect from the Switch 2
Even though Nintendo likes to do things that are totally unexpected, we would still expect the Nintendo Switch 2 to be more of a step forward in the same direction. At the very least, the graphics could be upgraded to be ready for 4K to keep up with the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The idea behind the Switch has been very popular, and the fact that it is both a home console and a handheld in one device makes it appealing to both gamers and parents. But we’re talking about Nintendo, so you never know what the famous video game company will do next.
As for when we hope to see the Switch 2, the second half of this year seems to be the earliest we could get official details, but we wouldn’t expect it to come out until sometime in 2024. Given that the Switch’s old hardware is now starting to make it hard for developers to make games, it does seem like the right time to announce a replacement.
If it comes out in the second half of this year, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is coming out soon, would be the Switch’s last game. This makes a lot of sense, since Breath of the Wild came out at the same time as the system in 2017. With a new mainline Zelda game at the start and end of the Switch’s life, it would feel like the Switch has come full circle.
