GOVEE AI GAMING SYNC BOX KIT: TWO-MINUTE REVIEW

Immersion in gaming can only take you so far before your RGB reaches a plateau. Fortunately, the Govee AI Gaming Sync Box Kit, the newest addition to Govee’s smart lights portfolio, fills the void.

I would want to preface this review by stating that I am a huge fan of the brand and a proud owner of several of its goods, including the Glide Hexa Light Panels and the Govee TV Immersion Kit, which has significantly improved my apartment’s movie nights. I believe, however, that the brand has excelled itself with this latest edition.

With the Govee AI Gaming Sync Box Kit, it brings its immersion technology to the next logical area – PC gaming – and elevates it.

This AI Gaming Sync Box Kit has improved upon the Govee TV Immersion Kit by providing more accurate colours and faster, real-time light synchronisation. Previously, the Govee TV Immersion Kit used a simple camera to capture the colours displayed on your TV and send those signals back to a control box, which then instructed the lights to display those colours.

Similar to the TV Immersion kit, this product includes a light strip designed to adhere to the back of your display as well as two light bars that rest on either side of that display. In this case, instead of a camera and a small control box, you will receive an HDMI AI Sync Box. This sync box connects through HDMI to your gaming PC or gaming laptop and then via HDMI to your monitor to achieve near-perfect, low-latency light synchronisation.

In addition, this sync box utilises Govee’s CogniGlow artificial intelligence technology, which interprets “pictures and the voice information of millions of audio-visual entertainment situations to create appropriate lighting effects.” As a result, the colours being projected are highly realistic and match what you see on your monitor, allowing for the highest level of immersion.

Don’t worry if you believe you lack the technical expertise to set up the Govee AI Gaming Sync Box Kit. In the manual, Govee provides clear and simple directions, and the process is also rather straightforward. Sticking the light strip to the back of your monitor (it’s just long enough to suit 27- to 34-inch monitors) may need precise measuring and a lot of leaning over if you have limited space. However, the remainder is quick and simple if you follow the directions.

After the physical installation, you only need to download the Govee app on your smartphone and add the smart light kit as a device to complete the installation. Govee provides instructions for this as well.

Therefore, if you are a novice at gaming illumination, you are not really at risk of breaking anything. The strip light is quite durable, and light bars, while being constructed of plastic, are also rather tough. Each light bar is supported by a stand, however neither is substantial enough to prevent wobble. Just be aware that if you shake your desk, these will move as if they were stiff skydancers.

The HDMI AI Sync Box includes its own illumination, which complements the rest of the backlighting, and has all the necessary ports on the back (three HDMI inputs, one of which has ARC support, one HDMI out, and two USB-C out that you use to connect the light strip and the light bars). There is an HDMI input button and a power button located on the front of the device. This is the one annoyance I have with the kit: it does not turn off when the input source is turned off, therefore you must manually turn it off as well. Thankfully, it’s compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, so you can do so hands-free. Or, you can use the app on your mobile device.

The entire Govee AI Gaming Sync Box Kit contains 24 unique LED lights (excluding those on the sync box), 14 on the light strip and 5 on each light bar. Hence, you will experience total immersion, especially considering that each environment may be customised via app. You may alter the colour on each, apply different scenes (lighting effects) to the entire kit, and even sync to the music played from an external source (it has a built-in mic for this very purpose).

The best feature of this kit is that, when in video mode, its display colours are synchronised with those of the monitor. This is not exclusive to video games; it also works flawlessly with videos. While testing, I viewed some incredible videos on YouTube (thanks to UltrawideVideos, Armadas, and Ronald Soethje for their videos), and the lights displayed amazingly realistic colours with almost no lag. Even if the space isn’t completely black, the colours will still display wonderfully because to their brightness and vibrancy.

However, this kit truly shines when used with PC games. In addition to employing artificial intelligence for its lighting synchronisation, it features content-reactive syncing that is responsive enough to keep up with games running at up to 240 frames per second.

In addition, it offers more than 30 game-specific lighting effects per game, allowing the kit to illuminate during game highlights. In League of Legends, for instance, it illuminates whenever I use an ability or when my team kills an opponent, which not only enhances my immersion but also makes the entire experience more enjoyable.

Currently, only League of Legends and Apex are supported. Support for additional PC games will be added in the future, with Valorant and Overwatch 2 slated for release in the near future, but for now there is only support for League of Legends and Apex.

This content-responsive syncing is still available for all other titles. I tested the kit with lively games such as Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Sable, and Psychonauts 2, and it offered the same degree of immersion as YouTube videos.

  • Where can you get it? Available in the US and the UK

The Govee AI Gaming Sync Box Kit is currently available for $299.99 (about £245 / AU$450) in the United States, which is somewhat pricey in comparison to the Govee DreamView T1 Pro TV Backlight, the newest version of the immersion kit, which costs less than $200/£200.
